Statutory Assessments

Throughout their time at primary school, children complete a number of statutory assessments. These help teachers understand pupils' progress and identify where additional support may be needed. Below is an overview of the assessments your child may take during their time at Button Lane.

Reception Baseline

During the first six weeks of starting Reception, all children complete the Reception Baseline Assessment. The assessment is carried out individually by the class teacher through a series of practical, interactive activities.  The assessment provides a starting point for measuring the progress pupils make from Reception to the end of Key Stage 2.

Year 1 Phonics Screening Check

The Phonics Screening Check takes place each June for all pupils in Year 1. It assesses children's ability to decode words using their phonics knowledge and helps identify those who may benefit from additional support with early reading.

Some Year 2 pupils will also complete the check if they:

  • did not take the assessment in Year 1;
  • did not meet the expected standard in Year 1; or
  • joined school during Year 2 without having previously completed the check.

The 2027 check will be completed week commencing 14th June.

Year 4 Multiplication Tables Check

The Multiplication Tables Check is a short online assessment completed by pupils in Year 4. Children answer 25 multiplication questions covering times tables up to 12 × 12. They are given six seconds per question, with three seconds rest between each question, so the test should last less than five minutes.

The purpose of the check is to ensure that pupils have a secure knowledge of their multiplication facts. It also helps schools identify any children who would benefit from further support, enabling teachers to build confidence and fluency in times tables before pupils move into Upper Key Stage 2.

The 2027 check will be completed week commencing 14th June.

Key Stage 2 SATs

SATs are the Standardised Assessment Tests that are given to children at the end of Key Stage 2.

The SATs take place over four days in May. Please see the timetable below for the dates of each of the SATs tests .

Key Stage 2 Reading

The reading test is a single paper with questions based on three passages of text. Your child will have one hour, including reading time, to complete the test.

There will be a selection of question types, including:

  • Labelling, e.g. ‘Label the text to show the title of the story’
  • Find and copy, e.g. ‘Find and copy one word that suggests what the weather is like in the story’
  • Short constructed response, e.g. ‘What does the bear eat?’
  • Open-ended response, e.g. ‘Look at the sentence that begins Once upon a time. How does the writer increase the tension throughout this paragraph? Explain fully, referring to the text in your answer.’

Key Stage 2 Grammar, Punctuation and Spelling test

The grammar, punctuation and spelling test consists of two parts: a grammar and punctuation paper requiring short answers, lasting 45 minutes, and an aural spelling test of 20 words, lasting around 15 minutes.

The grammar and punctuation test will include two sub-types of questions:

  • Selected response, e.g. ‘Identify the adjectives in the sentence below’
  • Constructed response, e.g. ‘Correct/complete/rewrite the sentence below,’ or, ‘The sentence below has an apostrophe missing. Explain why it needs an apostrophe.’

Key Stage 2 Mathematics

Children sit three papers in Mathematics:

  • Paper 1: arithmetic, 30 minutes
  • Papers 2 and 3: reasoning, 40 minutes per paper

Paper 1 will consist of fixed response questions, where children have to give the correct answer to calculations, including long multiplication and division. Papers 2 and 3 will involve a number of question types, including:

  • Multiple choice
  • True or false
  • Constrained questions, e.g. giving the answer to a calculation, drawing a shape or completing a table or chart
  • Less constrained questions, where children will have to explain their approach for solving a problem
